If you live in the midst of the bustling city and you want to get prepared for emergencies, you face some unique challenges. Limited interior space for food and water storage is only the beginning of your difficulties. How to evacuate among large crowds, then how to find and communicate with friends and family, near and far, can also be complicated. Preparing emergency shelter, light and power sources as well as how and where to cook a meal will also need some advance planning.

Where to begin? You should start with the basics like everyone else—water first, emergency kits second, food storage next, then other supplies; you might have to go about it a bit differently, that’s all. Here are a few issues that you’ll probably face, along with some suggestions for dealing with them.

The probability that at least one magnitude 6.75 earthquake could rattle the Wasatch Front in the next 50 years is 43 percent, a new report found.

"Think about that. That means flipping the coin, 1 out of 2 chances that we will have a big earthquake in the next 50 years," Wong said. "There is a really good chance that (Utah) will undergo a large, damaging earthquake in the Wasatch Front region. You can't get around that."

"The hazard and risk in the Wasatch Front region is higher than we had anticipated. I don't think anyone in the (study's) working group expected that the probabilities would be as high as they are," Wong said. "So the attitude that the big one will not occur in one's lifetime, that threat cannot be ignored and we need to change that attitude."

"For us, (the new probabilities) sound like reality," Dougherty said. "In the past, we've had kind of a broad range of possibilities, but now we know within our lifetimes and likely within our kids' lifetimes that that earthquake is going to happen. And that should wake a lot of people up."

Prepare Early...If Not For Yourself, Then For Those Less Fortunate

Erin McBride, a friend of Emergency Essentials, was asked to share her experiences with preparedness while in the very midst of a major tropical storm. As a person dedicated to the health and welfare of those less fortunate, her perspective is turned outward, focusing less upon her own well-being, and more upon the interests of those she serves.

"It was a very humbling moment for me. Families were giving up precious healthcare to get milk and bread. The poorest of families couldn’t get to the store yesterday when the shelves were full. They had to wait for their food stamps. Meanwhile, individuals like me, that didn’t need to wait for the first of the month, and could have better prepared in advance, were keeping these families from getting what they needed."
