Preparedness Helped Utah Woman

Michelle Richan has a longtime habit of being prepared. She figured there's always a possibility she could find herself in a position where she'd need a week's worth of supplies if she got lost or stuck, so she often travels with a survival kit.

That's exactly what happened when she got her SUV stuck in mud on a remote road in Box Elder County last week during a trek from Eureka, Nevada, to her home in Brigham City.

The Schools Aid Families in Emergencies (S.A.F.E.) Neighborhood program provides training and information to help you and your neighborhood recover from major disasters.

Schools Aid Families in Emergencies—S.A.F.E. Neighborhoods Mission Statement

S.A.F.E. Neighborhoods trains individuals in each elementary school neighborhood to open, staff, and operate their own neighborhood evacuation hub at the school until outside help arrives after a catastrophic disaster.  S.A.F.E. Neighborhoods:

• Teaches individuals to create a 96-hour kit, “grab your kit, walk to school” in the event of a catastrophic disaster.
• Assists and relies upon “neighbors helping neighbors” to assess critical and immediate emergency needs, keep residents informed, and reunify families.

STRATEGIES

Utilize Red Cross and neighbors to support S.A.F.E. Neighborhoods in the following ways:

• Incorporate the “whole community” philosophy to educate the public to “grab your kit and walk to school.”
• Teach individuals and families to create 96-hour kits and a household emergency plan.
• Orient neighborhood citizens to S.A.F.E. Neighborhoods and recruit community residents to prepare so they can implement S.A.F.E. Neighborhoods components.
• Encourage advanced training with the American Red Cross or other community organization. Red Cross volunteers will be advised to support their own personal community school during a catastrophic disaster.
• Facilitate partnerships with local community groups to foster continued coordination and leadership.
• Provide guidelines for developing a “Just in Time” (JIT) kit in each school equipped with tools for organizing and running a neighborhood evacuation hub .

Community Preparedness Workshop

Salt Lake City Emergency Management is holding their first 2017 Community Preparedness Workshop this Saturday, February 4.  They will address the basics of disaster preparedness.  

Many people have previously attended some of the SLC workshops.  Everyone is welcome, but at this time, Emergency Management is reaching out especially to people who have not been involved in the workshops by starting with some elemental aspects of disaster preparedness.  Maralin Hoff, the Earthquake Lady, will be a featured speaker.

The 1st Quarter 2017 Free Community Preparedness Workshop has been scheduled. 

(NO COST to attend)

Please join us at the workshop on Saturday, February 4th, 2017. Bagels, coffee, tea and orange juice will be served at 9:00 am. Welcome and opening address will begin at 9:30.

This workshop will be divided into three sessions. The first session will cover the dangers and risk Salt Lake City can encounter. The second session will present the importance of following the 3 steps to be ready and prepared. The last one will touch basis on the plethora of resources available for residents to be prepared. This workshops are designed to build a foundation to become a resilient community due to the structural impact of the 7.0 seismic event we will experience. 

We will furthermore, address considerations Salt Lake residents should make and steps that can be taken to reduce the impact of any disaster we could experience.

Germans told to stock up for a disaster

For the first time since the Cold War the German government is advising citizens to stockpile food and water for use in a national emergency.

Some opposition MPs said the new civil defence concept, to go before ministers on Wednesday, was scaremongering.

Citizens are advised to store enough food to last them 10 days, because initially a disaster might put national emergency services beyond reach.

Five days' water - two litres (half a gallon) per person daily - is advised.

CERT Refresher Courses

I am happy to announce that our free CERT refresher has moved to Anderson Foothill Library 1135 S 2100 E, Salt Lake City, UT 84108. This class will be held in the large downstairs meeting room. The information covered in these classes is from the 2011 version of the CERT manual, with some location specific material.

The probability that at least one magnitude 6.75 earthquake could rattle the Wasatch Front in the next 50 years is 43 percent, a new report found.

"Think about that. That means flipping the coin, 1 out of 2 chances that we will have a big earthquake in the next 50 years," Wong said. "There is a really good chance that (Utah) will undergo a large, damaging earthquake in the Wasatch Front region. You can't get around that."

"The hazard and risk in the Wasatch Front region is higher than we had anticipated. I don't think anyone in the (study's) working group expected that the probabilities would be as high as they are," Wong said. "So the attitude that the big one will not occur in one's lifetime, that threat cannot be ignored and we need to change that attitude."

"For us, (the new probabilities) sound like reality," Dougherty said. "In the past, we've had kind of a broad range of possibilities, but now we know within our lifetimes and likely within our kids' lifetimes that that earthquake is going to happen. And that should wake a lot of people up."

Erin McBride, a friend of Emergency Essentials, was asked to share her experiences with preparedness while in the very midst of a major tropical storm. As a person dedicated to the health and welfare of those less fortunate, her perspective is turned outward, focusing less upon her own well-being, and more upon the interests of those she serves.
